Detoxification in North Carolina

While stimulant abuse across the country appears to have leveled off or even decreased in some areas, North Carolina saw 395 meth lab seizure incidents during 2011. That is a 102% increase from 196 incidents in 2008 to 395 incidents in 2011. Ironically, while methamphetamine lab seizures have continued to escalate in North Carolina the primary substance sending residents into treatment during 2011 was marijuana addiction. During 2011, an estimated 30% of all North Carolina drug rehab enrollments cited marijuana addiction as their primary reason for receiving treatment. Following marijuana addiction was other opiates addiction, cocaine or crack cocaine addiction, heroin addiction and then lastly stimulant addiction.

Most North Carolina drug and alcohol treatment programs begin with detox followed by counseling and group therapy. Detox is the process of ridding the person's body of the remaining drugs and alcohol they have abused. When a person stops using drugs and alcohol their body rids the remaining substances from their system, often resulting in withdrawal symptoms. For this reason detoxification is best conducted in a treatment setting where the person's withdrawal symptoms can be closely monitored and managed.

In order to help residents overcome their addiction to drugs or alcohol drug rehab programs and medical detox facilities are located across New York State. When detox is conducted on site at a drug rehab program the treatment facility will provide everything necessary for this process. A medical staff member will work closely with the program participant to ensure their safety and comfort during detox and prepare them to continue on in the treatment program. On the other hand, when the detox is performed in a medical detox center the program participant will complete this phase of their recovery and then be admitted in a drug and alcohol rehab program. Many outpatient and short term treatment centers have their clients undergo medical detox off site prior to beginning their program. It is important to keep in mind that while this phase of recovery leaves the client looking and feeling better than they have in a long time, it is only the first step on the journey to lasting sobriety. Without continuing into addiction treatment, the newly sober person will struggle and often succumb to relapse.
