Outpatient Treatment in Arkansas

Arkansas residents who are dealing with a drug or alcohol problem have several different types of outpatient treatment available to them. Nearly 90% of the treatment programs in Arkansas are outpatient, with about half offering regular outpatient services and about 40% providing more intensive outpatient treatment, known as IOP. There are also 25 day-treatment/partial hospitalization outpatient programs for those who need even more intensive services, such as individuals who require services to address a co-occurring mental health disorder. These comprise the majority of outpatient services available in Arkansas, although there are also 5 facilities offering detoxification on an outpatient basis and 3 programs providing opiate maintenance services. Opiate maintenance outpatient programs dispense methadone or buprenorphine to help with stop cravings and opiate withdrawal, but usually provide very little in the way of actual treatment services such as counseling and therapy to address the actual causes of addiction. While these programs may address physical dependence it may not be the right answer for someone who wants to be truly abstinent.

The regular outpatient programs in Arkansas provide the least intensive approach, because clients typically attend treatment anywhere from 1-3 days a week for a few hours, while intensive outpatient treatment services require clients to take part in treatment services at least 3 days per week for 9-12 hours per day. Intensive outpatient in Arkansas is the best option for someone who needs the most intervention and support during the crucial and fragile time of being newly abstinent. Outpatient clients who take part in either a regular or intensive outpatient program will receive individuals counseling, participate in group therapy, and possibly even family therapy if this if offered. In many instances outpatient programs may provide an alternative to the 12-step approach, although most outpatient programs in the state use the 12-step model.
