There are nearly 550 outpatient treatment programs in Illinois for drug or alcohol addicted residents or for anyone with a substance abuse problem. Out of the programs available, about 90% deliver either regular or intensive outpatient treatment. There are also around 70 programs however which deliver day treatment and partial hospitalization, which is even more intensive that IOP and these facilities also offer services which other outpatient programs can't offer. For example, day treatment and partial hospitalization facilities and programs in Illinois can be an extremely beneficial and ideal option for clients who need daily intensive treatment but can't be in an inpatient setting, such as those struggling with a co-occurring mental health disorder which will need to be addressed concurrent to their addiction or substance abuse problem. There are also 43 facilities at this time which provide outpatient detoxification services in Illinois, as well as 53 which administer either methadone or buprenorphine to opiate addicted clients to help with drug cravings and opiate withdrawal. Opiate maintenance treatment with methadone or buprenorphine is usually a long-term commitment, for a lifetime for most, that must be maintained daily.
In Illinois, services delivered in a regular outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment facility are much the same, with the most distinctive difference being that IOP's provide services 3 or more days a week for about 9-12 hours per day where a regular outpatient program is 1 day a week. So for someone who will benefit from a more intensive treatment setting and regiment, intensive outpatient is much more ideal. Someone at a high risk of relapse because of a chronic long-term drug or alcohol problem should really be in an inpatient or residential facility, but when this isn't possible an IOP or an intensive day-treatment/partial hospitalization facility in Illinois would be best.
