Outpatient Treatment in Kansas

Kansas residents who are dealing with a drug or alcohol problem have over 200 outpatient programs available to them, which accounts for nearly 97% of the treatment available in the state. Nearly 95% deliver regular outpatient services but 50% of these facilities and independent facilities deliver intensive outpatient treatment. There are less than 10 outpatient programs in the state provide day-treatment and partial hospitalization, which are programs typically designed specifically to meet the needs of treatment clients who need a daily structured environment and clients who have a co-occurring disorder that will need to be treated aggressively and concurrently. For individuals who need detoxification services on an outpatient basis, there are 12 facilities which provide these services and 8 providing opiate maintenance at which they administer either methadone or buprenorphine to opiate dependent clients. These drugs are known to help reduce or eliminate cravings and stop opiate withdrawal, but will need to be maintained every day to continue to stop withdrawal and cravings. With this in mind, it may not be the right choice for everyone.

In Kansas, regular outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment services are not much different, simply the manner in which they are delivered vary greatly. Regular treatment clients are typically required to take part in treatment services 1 day per week, whereas intensive outpatient clients are involved in treatment for at least 3 days per week for 9-12 hours per day. Intensive outpatient is more suitable for someone who is at a high risk of relapse because of a chronic drug or alcohol problem or because of a co-occurring disorder. In either case, outpatient clients typically receive individuals counseling and group therapy, and some programs even offer family therapy. Depending on the treatment model, clients can expect a treatment plan based off of the 12-steps and in some cases an alternative outpatient program including those which offer a holistic approach.
