Military insurance covers treatment services including detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other rehabilitation services all of which need pre-authorization. It will first be determined which services are medically and psychologically necessary, and then authorization can be obtained based off of this determination through your regional military insurance contractor. Pre-authorization is not required however in the case of an emergency such as a drug overdose for example, in which case authorization will only be required for continued services. The military personnel being treated simply needs to contact their regional contractor within 72 hours after being admitted.
There are certain limitations to what treatment services military insurance will cover. For example, an inpatient stay for detoxification is limited to 7 days and must be a facility which is approved through one's military insurance, although this limit can be raised by your general contractor which is good news for clients who have more extensive issues to address. Approval for an inpatient or partial hospitalization for further rehabilitation will only be authorized if it is an approved facility, and there is a limited amount of time this is allowed as well. For example, 21 days or one inpatient stay per benefit period is allowed, and this counts towards a 30-45 stay in a facility which deliver acute inpatient psychiatric care if this is later deemed necessary. There are 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, as well as 15 family therapy visits delivered on an outpatient basis. Family therapy can begin after other rehabilitation services have been completed and individual outpatient therapy is not covered by military insurance.
There is a better understanding about why these services need to be made available through military insurance and there are more drug rehab programs and options available to military members than ever before. Drug rehab programs which deliver treatment services to military members are aware of the fact that many struggle with issues that are a reflection of their experience in the military specifically, and how this can provoke a substance abuse problem. So many of the services provided through military insurance hone in on such issues so that military members can find relief from these burdens and healthier outlets so that they don't turn to substance abuse in the future.
