California residents with an addiction that needs treatment have over 1,150 outpatient treatment options available to them, which comprises over 70% of the programs available in the state. There are over 1,040 regular outpatient treatment programs, but there are also over 620 intensive outpatient programs for individuals who need a more robust support system and a more dedicated effort to the treatment process. There are also nearly 250 day-treatment and partial hospitalization programs which provide a beneficial alternative to individuals who require more intervention because of the nature of their addiction, such as someone who is struggling with a co-occurring disorder. There are also over 200 outpatient detox facilities as well as nearly 150 programs providing opiate maintenance services. Opiate maintenance outpatient programs use prescription opiates such as methadone or buprenorphine to help clients with cravings and to stop opiate withdrawal. But clients should be aware that this is not a solution for individuals whose short-term goal is to be completely abstinent, because of the fact that opiate maintenance clients are typically on these prescription opiates daily for the rest of their lives.
In California, regular outpatient clients typically participate in treatment 1 day a week and receive counseling and therapy on both an individual a group basis. Intensive outpatient treatment services, are just that, much more intensive clients to be involved in treatment for at least 3 days per week for 9-12 hours per day. If someone for some reason can't commit to an inpatient program but needs a higher level of support and care, an intensive outpatient program in California would be a good option. If additional services are needed beyond treatment to address addiction, such as a mental health disorder which needs to be treated concurrently, some IOP's in California provide these additional services or as mentioned above they can be obtained at the facilities which provide partial-hospitalization.
